WORCESTER — A new performance venue to add to its lineup, a new contest, a new opening act — the news is starting to come in about First Night Worcester 2015.

But First Night Worcester executive director Howard McGinn, who successfully navigated a financial crisis last year, is counting down to a prospective New Year’s Eve celebration with “fingers crossed.”

“We’re going forward. At this point we’re still fundraising,” McGinn said.

Legendary live music venue to join New Year’s Eve celebration

WORCESTER, MA – [August 26, 2014] – An historic partnership is in the works as First Night Worcester announces Ralph’s Rock Diner as a venue for its New Year’s Eve arts festival. “We couldn’t be more excited about this,” said Howard McGinn executive director of First Night Worcester. “Edgy and funky with a cool, fresh vibe, Ralph’s will bring a whole new dimension to First Night.”

One part diner and one part music hall, Ralph’s Rock Diner has been a Worcester landmark and live music destination for more than 30 years. Located at 148 Grove Street, the unique, split-level, 400-capacity venue boasts an authentic 1930’s diner serving world-class burgers & chili. Attached to the diner in a former factory building is an ultra-cool, bohemian-esque gathering space filled with murals painted by local artists. Upstairs, the concert room has a laid-back feel and lots of eccentric furnishings. There are mannequin legs jutting from a wall; rock stickers plastered to a window (from the bands Spinning Jenny and Grinning Broadly, as well as from the Newbury Comics chain); and even a couple of motorcycles hanging from the ceiling (though this isn’t a biker bar). Boston acts Jennifer Tryin, Cobalt 60, and Letters to Cleo have all played there; as have such national bands as Alice in Chains, Living Color and the Smithereens.

“We can’t wait to welcome First Night,” said Vincent Hemmeter, owner of Ralph’s Rock Diner. “First Night and Ralph’s have each been serving the Worcester community for more than three decades. It’s terrific to team up with an organization as committed to our city as we are,” he said.

A full evening of First Night programming is being planned for the Ralph’s two stages, all free with a First Night button.   Information will be posted as it becomes available at www.firstnightworcester.org. For more information, contact Howard McGinn, executive director at (508) 799-4909 or howard@firstnightworcester.org.
